Our Blue Meadows programme is a holistic approach to seagrass protection, regeneration and restoration at scale.

by Ocean Conservation Trust in Plymouth, England, United Kingdom

At a time when the world needs to mitigate the effects of climate change, some of the greatest carbon capturing habitats are being damaged and degraded. Seagrass is a key part of the solution for a healthy Ocean and planet.

The Ocean Conservation Trust's Blue Meadows programme is a holistic approach to seagrass protection, regeneration, and restoration at scale. Our goal is to protect the seagrass meadows we already have, and restore the ones we have lost. Over the next 10 years, we are aiming to protect 30% of all UK seagrass meadows and restore 50 hectares of seagrass. We will also work to further build capacity, so that each year we can restore more than 50 hectares of seagrass. Our Blue Meadows platform will be used as a valuable tool to engage with communities and stakeholders, so we can collaboratively develop a holistic process to restore seagrass at scale, in the southwest and beyond.

The Mini Meadows scheme provides a nature-based solution to climate change and biodiversity loss, and is an opportunity for people and businesses to come together to save a critical habitat for the survival of people and our planet. Mini Meadows takes into consideration existing seagrass areas, which are nationally declining, as well as new restoration sites, combining protection and restoration in one simple contribution.

Each Mini Meadow provides an array of ecosystem services and as a supporter, we will provide the approximate nature benefits that your contribution helps deliver. For example, 500 Mini Meadows supported can help: capture 1610kg of carbon and 24.4kg of nitrogen, provide enough oxygen for a person for 101 days and provides a sanctuary for 540,000 fish and invertebrates. Your contribution will also help prevent coastal erosion and will support our fish stocks for years to come.

Each Mini Meadow needs £10 of financial support per annum, for a 5 year period whilst we wait for a formal verified carbon and biodiversity credit to be further advanced for our Blue Meadows programme. Mini Meadows is scalable, so you can choose the number of Meadows you'd like to support based on your level of giving.

Nature can't wait, and we urge you to join our movement delivering scalable impact for our Ocean!
